Review of Short Story

Diane Walsh’s short story, “Random Train Love”, offers a reflective and poetic account of a solo journey aboard Amtrak’s Empire Builder, traversing the American landscape from the Pacific Northwest to Washington, D.C. The narrative unfolds through the lens of a traveler who finds solace and spiritual connection in the passing scenery, the rhythm of the train, and the fleeting encounters along the way.

The story is imbued with a sense of intimacy and introspection, as the protagonist observes the changing landscapes—from the swaying trees of the Pacific Northwest to the snow-covered plains of Montana—with a deep appreciation for the natural world. The presence of a compassionate train attendant, Gul, adds a human touch to the journey, highlighting themes of kindness and connection amidst the solitude of travel.

Walsh’s prose is rich with sensory details and emotional resonance, capturing the essence of train travel as a metaphor for life’s passage and the moments of grace that punctuate our daily existence. The narrative invites readers to contemplate the beauty found in transient experiences and the profound impact of seemingly ordinary encounters.
